Utah Baseball Travels to California
The Utah baseball team travels to Berkeley, Calif., for a three-game series against California beginning on Thursday, April 5, at 6:00 p.m. PT/7:00 p.m. MT. The series continues on Friday, April 6, at 7:00 p.m. PT and Saturday, April 7, at 2:00 p.m. PT. All three games will be televised on the Pac12 Networks. Utah is 5-3 in its last eight games. The Utes are coming off a Pac-12 series win over Oregon State, which came into the weekend ranked No. 1 in the nation. Utah (7-20, 3-3 Pac-12) is fifth in the Pac-12 in hits (249) and sixth in the league in batting average (.268). The Utes are third in the league in stolen bases (26) and tied for third in triples (7). Utah leads the Pac-12 in double plays (25), is tied for second in assists (281) and is fifth in fielding percentage (.976). The Utes are first in the league with 10 pickoffs. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., is on a 13-game hitting streak and is seventh in the Pac-12 in batting average (.373), tied for the league lead in doubles (11), leads the league in doubles per game (0.50) and is 11th in slugging percentage (.542). Wade Gulden is fourth in the league in triples (3). Oliver Dunn is tied for second in the league with 20 double plays and is tied for third with 74 assists. Trenton Stoltz is third in the Pac-12 with 16 appearances. Brett Brocoff is one of eight pitchers who has not allowed a home run this year. California is also coming off a strong weekend series, taking two of three from then 15th-ranked UCLA. The Golden Bears are 16-10 overall and 3-6 in the Pac-12.
Infield
· Sophomore Oliver Dunn is in his second year starting at second base. He is hitting .279. Dunn is sixth in the league with 126 plate appearances, and is tied for 10th with 17 walks. He leads Utah with 17 walks, 16 RBI and 16 runs scored, is tied for the team lead with three multipleRBI games and five stolen bases (5-of-6), ranks second on the team with a .423 slugging percentage and is tied for second on the team with three home runs. He has eight multiple-hit games, 29 hits and a .389 on-base percentage. A strong fielder, he is tied for second in the Pac12 in double plays (20) and tied for third in the league in assists (74).
· Dunn has had a hit in nine of Utah’s last 11 games. He scored the game-winning run against BYU. · Dunn has a .260 career batting average (78 career games). · Senior Wade Gulden has started 20 games at first base with two starts in left field (22 total games). He is hitting .217 and is fourth in the Pac-12 with three triples. Gulden is second on the team with 13 walks, has two doubles, seven RBI and has scored nine runs. In the field, he is tied for ninth in the league with 16 double plays. · Gulden went 4-for-5 with three walks against Oregon State, scoring four runs with one triple. He drove in the game-winning run against BYU after drawing a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded. · Gulden has played in 135 career games with 90 starts between the infield, outfield and designated hitter. He has a .239 career batting average. · At third base, Rykker Tom is hitting .283. He is second on the team with 29 hits, nine multiple-hit games, 14 runs scored and tied for second with 11 RBI. Tom also has five doubles and one home run. He is tied for sixth in the Pac-12 with 106 at bats. · Tom hit .333 (4-of-12) against Oregon State in the series. He has had a hit in nine of Utah’s last 11 games. · Tom transferred from San Diego and redshirted before beginning his freshman season at Utah. · Freshman Matt Richardson has started 21 games at shortstop and is second on the team with a .307 batting average. He is tied for second on the team with 11 RBI. Richardson has two doubles, a triple, nine runs and three stolen bases (3-for-5). He is tied for sixth in the Pac-12 in double plays (17) and eighth in the Pac-12 in assists (63). · Richardson hit .308 (4-of-13) and drove in three runs during the Oregon State series. · Redshirt freshman Davis Delorefice has a .250 batting average and has scored 12 runs. He has two doubles and seven RBI. Delorefice has started 21 games total, including 10 in the infield, seven in the outfield (stepping in due to an outfielder shortage due to injuries) and four at designated hitter. 2018 Utah Baseball · Redshirt freshman Braden DeBenedictis has started five games at designated hitter and six at first base over 14 total games. He is hitting .300 on the year with four RBI, three runs scored, a double and a triple. DeBenedictis was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in his only game against Oregon State and had a hit in a start at first against BYU on Tuesday. · Freshman Demitri Colacchio has started two games at designated hitter (five games total) and is hitting .125 in eighth at-bats. · Junior Isaac Cruz has made four appearances, with his first start at DH in game one against USC. He is 1-for-1 with the bases loaded this year and is hitting .200 (1-of-5) on the season with two RBI.
Outfield
· Junior DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. leads Utah and is seventh in the Pac-12 with a .373 batting average. He is tied for the league lead with 11 doubles and leads the league and ranks 13th in the NCAA in doubles per game (0.50). Keirsey ranks 11th in the Pac-12 with a .542 slugging percentage. He leads Utah with 31 hits, 10 multiple-hit games and a .413 on-base percentage. Keirsey is third on the team with 13 runs scored. He has nine RBI, one home run and three stolen bases (3-for-5). · Keirsey has been stymied with a hamstring injury which has seen him start at designated hitter for most of the season. · Keirsey is currently on a team-long 13-game hitting streak. Keirsey went 2-for-4 against BYU on Tuesday. · A two-time All-Pac-12 player, Keirsey has a .320 career batting average. · Junior Chandler Anderson has started 19 games in left field and is hitting .208 on the year and is second on the team with seven doubles. He is tied for the team lead in stolen bases (5-of-5). Anderson has scored eight runs and has two RBI. Anderson has recently been sidelined due to a shoulder injury. · Anderson has 60 career starts (95 games) with a .276 career batting average. · Sophomore Dominic Foscalina has started in both center and left field (21 total starts). He hit a three-run home run on Tuesday against BYU. · Migueles is a transfer from Pima Community College. · Freshman Shea Kramer has started at first, designated hitter, left field, right field and catcher over 17 games (14 total starts). He is hitting .250, has eight RBI, nine runs scored, a home run and five doubles on the year with a .393 slugging percentage. · Kramer hit .444 against Oregon State (4-of-9) with a hit in all three games including two doubles and two walks. He doubled up a runner at home from the outfield in game three of the series.
Catcher
· Freshman Christopher Rowan, Jr., has started 20 games at catcher and is tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with six runners caught stealing. Rowan is second on the team with a .403 on-base percentage, is third on the team with a .292 batting average and has five doubles, five RBI and has scored six runs. · Rowan hit .364 (4-of-11) with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI against Oregon State. · Freshman Shea Kramer has also started seven games at catcher (see under ‘outfield’ for more).
Pitchers
· Junior Josh Tedeschi has pitched in seven games with three starts (35 innings). He was pitching in long relief before starting the past three weekends. Tedeschi has a 4.63 ERA and is second on the team with 32 strikeouts. He is tied for sixth in the Pac-12 with two pickoffs. · Tedeschi has 35 career appearances with a 5.03 ERA and 2-5 record. · Senior Tanner Thomas leads Utah with 36 strikeouts and ranks ninth in the league in innings pitched (39 1/3). He has a 4.35 ERA with a 1-2 record. ·Thomas allowed two runs on four hits over six innings in a no decision against Oregon State in his last outing. · Thomas has pitched in 51 games (10 starts) with a 4.42 career ERA and 99 strikeouts. · Freshman Brett Brocoff, Utah’s Sunday starter, is third on the team with 30 strikeouts.
