We confirm this in the first line of the Lord’s Prayer, “Our Father, who art in heaven; hallowed be thy name.” As children, when we first study the commandments, we are taught that the Third Commandment deals with profanity. In it’s literal sense, this is true. But the Third Commandment is much more than a warning not to curse or swear. If we use God or Jesus’s name in empty ways (saying “Oh God!”), we are violating the Third Commandment. Whenever we make an oath loosely in God’s name (“I swear to God…”), we are violating the Third Commandment. If we trivialize God’s name in a joking way (“Rub a dub dub, thanks for the grub, yeah God!) or on a t-shirt or bumper sticker, we are violating the Third Commandment. This Commandment covers any claim we make in reference to God’s name. For example, if we say we are God’s people, we must conduct ourselves in a manner that honors His name. If we say we are Christian, but then do not act like a Christian, we are taking God’s name in vain. We honor God’s name through our worship, our witness and our lifestyle. We are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. God baptizes us in His name, because He claims us as his own. For this reason, it is essential that we do nothing to dishonor His name. That’s a pretty tall order, but WAIT, there’s more! The second half of the verse deals with punishment for misusing God’s name. God is telling us, clearly, that He will not just look the other way when we misuse His name, or choose to live in a manner that dishonors His name. Deuteronomy 28:58 tells us that God reserves the right to punish: “If you are not careful to do all the words of this law which are written in this book, that you may fear this Toll free 877-239-3655 glorious and awful name, the Lord your God…” The good www.stitchintree.com news? Ten Commandments PATTERN SERIES
Third Commandment Before the 1st century AD, it became common for Jews to avoid speaking God’s name, for fear of using it inappropriately. Therefore, I’ve chosen the block, Nameless, to remind us of the Third Commandment.
