DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY®, DAYTONA BEACH, FL
PROJECT SCOPE Demolition and reconstruction of Daytona International Speedway®. TYPE Race track paving OWNER International Speedway Corporation PROJECT DESCRIPTION In July 2010, Lane began the demolition and construction of Daytona International Speedway®, the most well-known race track in NASCAR. Work consisted of seven-inch milling of 42,883 square yards of the track, including the front stretch, backstretch and pit road, as well as five-inch milling of 36,000 square yards of aprons. In turns one through four, Lane crews raked off 5,185 cubic yards of asphalt and lime rock with a long-stick Hitachi 450, then hauled them off for crushing. Lane used approximately 20,000 cubic yards of material to build access roads behind the crash walls in the turns. It used Caterpillar D-9s to support the paving equipment in the 31-degree turns. The competitive areas of the track required four lifts of asphalt. The bottom lift had two-inch, open-graded drainage layer ends at the hinge point of the track, paralleled by six-inch, perforated under-drain. A two-inch base course was next, followed by an inch-and-a-half wearing course. The skid pads and road course tie-ins each received an inch-and-a-half overlay. Lane produced the 50,000 ton of mix with a temporary asphalt plant located off the backstretch coming out of turn two.
PROJECT BACKGROUND The Daytona 500, NASCAR’s premier racing event, was halted twice in February 2010 because of a pothole repair. Initially crews repaired the pothole that developed on the second turn after 32 laps. But the repair came undone due to unusually cold and rainy weather and had to be repaired again. The two red flags disrupted the race for nearly two and half hours. This project was the track’s first repave since 1979.
