DULLES METRORAIL UTILTILY RELOCATION, DULLES, VA
PROJECT SCOPE Installation of utilities including duct bank (electrical, traction power, Verizon and common communication), waterline for Fairfax Water Authority and the City of Falls Church, sanitary sewer and storm drain. CONTRACT VALUE $107.3 million TYPE Heavy civil OWNER Dulles Transit Partners, LLC PROJECT DESCRIPTION This work is part of the first phase of construction for the extension of the Metro system toward Dulles International Airport. Lane’s project team worked closely with the prime contractor, Dulles Transit Partners (Bechtel & Washington Group) and local property owners on the project. Dozens of unmarked utilities and gasoline-contaminated soil complicated the work. Lane crews worked day and night shifts to meet tight schedule requirements and to coordinate our work with the operations of multiple adjacent contractors. Lane drafted special maintenance-of-traffic (MOT) plans for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic and built temporary sidewalks and signage to guide pedestrian through the work area. Lane used support of excavation systems extensively to minimize impact to the businesses adjacent to the project work areas. The contract included installation of 11-miles of duct-bank, 138 manholes, 11,000 linear feet of waterline and 8,000 linear feet of jacked steel casings.

Most of the extension will be constructed in the median of the Dulles International Airport Access Highway and Dulles Connector Road. The project, to be built in two phases, will include 11 new Metro stations. PROJECT BENEFITS The Dulles Metrorail will: • Provide high-quality, high-capacity transit service in the Dulles Corridor, saving travel time to downtown D.C. • Expand the regional rail system to provide a viable alternative to automobile travel • Support future transit-oriented development along the corridor ABOUT LANE The Lane Construction Corporation is one of America’s premier heavy contractors and the preferred partner on projects that connect and improve the communities and the world in which we live.
