Grand Junction Fire FC Rec Session Planner U9 Week 3 April 2-6 Theme: Passing and Receiving Towards Space Aim: To improve passing technique using the inside of the foot, and to improve receiving into space without the ball stopping

Warm up: split group into teams of 3/4. One tall cone with 6 disc cones on top, 10-15yds away two tall cones make up a gate. First player passes to partner behind the gate. If it goes through gate and is received the passer picks up one disc cone, runs to the gate and places it on one of the cones. If it misses the gate, or receiver misses the ball, passer still runs to the gate, but no cone is taken. First team to move all cones from one side to the other wins. Progress by: forcing all players to use their weaker foot, if any cone is knocked down they must start over. Coaching points: inside of foot, step into pass with toes pointing towards target, follow through

Technical work: in groups of 3/4. Receiver starts by tall cone behind 5x5 box. 10-15yds away, passer plays ball in towards the box. Receiver moves into the box to meet the ball, and takes a touch out of either side of the box (with inside or outside of foot). Receiver dribbles to end of other line, while passer runs up to the tall cone to become the receiver. Progress by: once the passer has played the ball have them apply pressure to receiver forcing them left or right. Receiver must take their touch away from the defender, make players use weaker foot to pass and receive Coaching points: all above points, receive with either inside our outside, first touch must be positive and take them out of the square don’t kill the ball dead.

Game scenario: area 40x30yds. 4 goals one on each side of the field. 8v4 in attackers favour (or similar depending on numbers). Attackers aim to score in any of the 4 goals, but must make 3 passes before they do so. Look for positive first touches that take the attackers towards space, away from defenders or towards an open player to pass to. Rotate the 4 defenders at regular intervals. If defenders win the ball, they can also score in any of the 4 goals. Progress by: increasing/decreasing the number of defenders, increasing the number of passes attackers must make before they can score (both of these depend upon success), make defenders complete a pass before they can score

Small sided game: 1v1 with support players. Small fields 15x10yds. One player on the sideline, they give the ball back to whichever player passed them the ball. Play for 2 minutes, then rotate players on fields and support players. Progress by: if a player concedes they swap with support player, winners get to stay on, remove cones in middle and play 2v2 with support players on both sides. Coaching points: above points, first touch towards space or support player, receive with a directional touch so the ball doesn’t stop, always move after passing to the support player
