Uses 3 different fabrics in a 6 inch (9 inch, 12 inch) block Cut Fabric A – Main focal fabric 5 squares – 2 ½ inches (3 ½ inches, 4 ½ inches) 1 squares -‐ 4 inches (5 inches, 6 inches) Fabric B – Inner star points 1 square -‐ 4 inches (5 inches, 6 inches) Fabric C – Outer star points 2 squares -‐ 4 inches (5 inches, 6 inches) Start by making 4 half square triangles, 2 using a Fabric A and Fabric B 2 inch square combination and 2 using a Fabric B and Fabric C 2 inch square combination.
Place the fabrics with the printed sides touching each other (right sides together).
Take your ruler and draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner along the diagonal.
Using the line marked, draw another line ¼ inch away from it. Repeat on the opposite side of the line. You now have three lines.
At the machine, sew along both outside lines.
Now carefully cut along the middle drawn line, this will ensure you have ¼ inch seam.
Once you have both pieces done, take your blocks to the ironing board and press the seam toward the darker fabric side.
Cut the 4 half square triangles diagonally across both fabrics.
Line up the half square triangles so that each resulting square has 1 Fabric A/Fabric B triangle and 1 Fabric B/Fabric C triangle and the Fabric B pieces are opposite each other.
Sew them together for 4 squares. Press open.
Trim the 4 blocks 2 ½ inches (3 ½ inches, 4 ½ inches). Line up the diagonal line on the ruler with the diagonal line on the quilt block and the 1 ¼ inch (1 ¾ inch, 2 ¼ inch) grid markings touching the center point of the block.
Cut off the left hand side and top of extending fabric.
Rotate the block half way and again line up the ruler so that the diagonal marking on the ruler matches the diagonal on the block, the 1 ¼ inch (1 ¾ inch, 2 ¼ inch) mark touches the center of the block and the first 2 edges sit on the 2 ½ inch (3 ½ inch, 4 ½ inch) lines.
Cut away fabric extending beyond the ruler.
Line up the 9 blocks with Fabric A in the center and on the 4 corners and the quarter square triangles, hour glass shapes, at the top, bottom and both sides with Fabric A on the outer edges. Sew the 3 blocks in the top row together, the 3 blocks in the center row together, and the 3 blocks in the bottom row together. Press the seams toward all of the solid Fabric A squares.
Sew the three rows together and press open. This is the Ohio Star Quilt Block.
