THE SERIES: Washington & Jefferson and Johns Hopkins will meet for just the second time on Saturday when the two kickoff in an NCAA First Round playoff game at 12 pm at Cameron Stadium. The last match-up came in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Football Championship and was hosted in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins’ Homewood Field. The Presidents are making their 25th NCAA appearance (second-most all-time), while the Blue Jays enter the field for the ninth time and seventh consecutive season. JHU won the first meeting, 42-10. THE COACHES: Mike Sirianni (Mount Union, ’94) owns a 138-30 (.821) record at W&J in his 15th season as head coach. With Saturday’s win over Waynesburg, Sirianni became the W&J career coaching wins leader. The seven-time PAC Coach of the Year (after winning the award with Case Western Reserve’s Greg Debeljak this year) and two-time South Region Coach of the Year (2004, 2012) is seventh among all active NCAA coaches in winning percentage (minimum of 10 years). The Presidents have made 12 postseason appearances under Sirianni, highlighted by NCAA quarterfinal finishes in 2004 and 2008. Jim Margraff (Johns Hopkins, ’82) is in his 28th season as the winningest head coach at his alma mater and holds a record of 209-86-3 (.706). Johns Hopkins is making its ninth NCAA playoffs appearance, all of which have come under Margraff’s guidance. Margraff has won four Centennial Conference Coach of the Year awards and three AFCA Regional Coach honors.

GIVE THANKS: The Presidents boast an overall record of 37-10 (.787) in November under Mike Sirianni. CLAIM TO THE TOP: Sirianni became the winningest coach in W&J football history on Saturday with his 138th victory in 15 years, passing former leader John Luckhardt (1982-1998) atop the list. W&J has averaged 9.2 wins per season during Sirianni’s tenure. BUILD AND MAINTAIN: One of the things that has allowed Sirianni to amass so many victories is that his teams are extremely good at winning games in which they’ve had a lead at halftime, boasting a 108-3 record in those contests, a whopping .973 winning percentage. BALL SECURITY: Since Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J holds a 30-3 record when not committing a turnover, a winning percentage of .909. HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE: W&J has won 29-straight games at Cameron Stadium, with the last loss coming on Sept. 8, 2012, a 28-24 setback against St. John Fisher. #ZOOMINZUBIK: Senior WR Jesse Zubik is number two in all NCAA divisions among active players in career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns (behind Jake Wieneke of FCS South Dakota State in both). He currently sits at 273 receptions, 4,458 yards and 51 TDs in 42 career games. His touchdown total is a PAC record and tied for 10th in Division III history. Against Bethany earlier this season, he became just the 22nd wide receiver in the level’s history to top 4,000 yards and is now just the seventh to reach 4,500 career yards. Last weekend against Waynesburg, he broke the W&J career receptions of 269 previously held by Alex Baroffio (2010-13). GIRT ‘ER DONE: Senior DL Matt Girting had a career afternoon on Saturday vs Waynesburg, recording 3.0 TFLs and a pair of sacks, including one that resulted in a safety in the first quarter. For his efforts, he earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week. MURGO THE MACHINE: Senior LB Nick Murgo ranks third among active Division III players and 11th among all divisions with 391 career total tackles. His 217 solo tackles are second in D-III and 10th across the four levels of NCAA football. Murgo has reached double digits in stops five times this season (23 overall), with each one in 2017 netting 11 tackles. O’SHEA CAN YOU SEE: Senior CB O’Shea Anderson picked off two passes on Saturday, including his second returned for a score of the season, to give him six INTs on the year, which tops the PAC. With one more interception, he would move onto the W&J single-season top five list, and with two more added to his 10 career picks, he would reach fifth place on the career list. HAVE A (DALTON) DAY: Senior LB Dalton Day registered a career-best 16 tackles in Saturday’s win over Waynesburg, the most by a President this season and the most since former LB Jalen Morris had 18 in the 2015 season finale. Day, who had 20 career tackles entering 2017, now has 58 career stops thanks to 38 this year. Day is W&J’s leading special teams tackler this year with 16, including 15 on kickoff coverage. GIVE ME THAT: W&J’s 18 interceptions top the PAC and rank 13th in the country. The Presidents’ 27 turnovers gained are 11th in the nation, while W&J’s 1.20 turnover margin is 10th in the country. MARRA-VELOUS: Senior DE Tom Marra is tied for second in the PAC with 16.0 tackles for loss this season, while his 1.6 per game are 35th in Division III. The senior now has a new career high, passing last year’s 15 TFL, and 36.5 in three seasons.

THINK BIG, PLAY BIG: W&J has 50 plays from scrimmage this season that have gone for 20-plus yards, including 38 through the air and 12 on the ground. In total, 13 have been for scores, with 10 coming via pass. HISTORY LESSON: Washington & Jefferson has won 734 games in its 126-year history (734-389-40), third behind Mount Union (779) and Wittenberg (764) among NCAA Division III schools. Widener (699) and Wabash (680) round out the top five. Among all NCAA divisions, the Presidents’ win total places them 22nd all-time, with Michigan ranking first at 948 wins. RANKINGS: W&J currently sits at No. 10 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll and is No. 14 in the D3football.com Top 25 poll. The AFCA ranking is the first time W&J has entered the top 10 since 2009. A PERFECT STORM: W&J finished the regular season undefeated for the 13th time in the storied history of the program. 11 W&J teams have won 10-or-more straight games in-season with 2017, 2007, 2006, 1995, 1990, 1987 and 1921 posting 10 wins; 2001, 1993, 1990 winning 11 straight and 2004 posting 12 consecutive victories. This year’s 10 wins mark the 18th season W&J has reached double-digit victories. CREAM OF THE CROP: W&J has won 25 PAC titles in program history, far and away the most in league history and more than the next three teams combined (John Carroll and Thomas More are tied for second at eight apiece, while Carnegie Mellon has seven titles). IT’S BEEN A WHILE: Saturday’s NCAA playoff game against Johns Hopkins will be the 47th in W&J history, but will be the first at Cameron Stadium since the Presidents defeated Christopher Newport, 35-29, on Nov. 22, 2008. ALL-PAC PERFORMERS: W&J placed 15 on the All-PAC teams which were released this week, the fourth-most in the league behind Carnegie Mellon (18) and Westminster and Case Western Reserve (17). The Presidents placed six members on the First Team, two offensive and four defensive, the third time since 2003 that W&J has had more defensive First Team members than offensive (2003, 2009). First Team: Senior CB O’Shea Anderson, senior DE Tom Marra, senior S Luke Merhaut, senior LB Nick Murgo, junior OL Andrew Reo, senior WR Jesse Zubik. Second Team: Senior OL Matt Babbit. Honorable Mention: Junior OL Phillip Bobich, senior TE Jake Cullen, senior WR Cody Hearst, senior DE Freddie McKissick, sophomore DL Jeffrey Oxner, junior LB Zac Quattrone, senior QB Alex Rowse, junior S Zach Royba. Additionally, senior WR Benjamin Waugh earned a spot on the league’s new Sportsmanship Team.
W&J VS. THE CENTENNIAL: W&J holds a 3013-2 (.688) all-time record against current footballplaying members of the Centennial Conference. The most recent match-up between the two conferences was the only other meeting between W&J and Johns Hopkins in the first round of the 2012 Playoffs. W&J is 2-2 all-time in the playoffs vs. Centennial members. School Dickinson Franklin & Marshall Gettysburg Johns Hopkins Juniata McDaniel Moravian Muhlenberg Susquehanna Ursinus Totals
