The Kiwanis growth picture experienced its ups and downs during the 1980’s with positive results in the end showing a net gain of 676 new clubs and 13,459 new members. In 1980 the “Membership Roundup” plan was promoted. The basic premise: Pull together a list of potential members, invite them to a meeting with a free meal, educate them about Kiwanis, put the club’s best pitchman front and center, and try to sign them up on the spot. “Take Ten to Care” asked Kiwanians to pledge they would take ten minutes of their time to sponsor a new member. In 1986 “Project 39” was unveiled. With the average age of a Kiwanian at fifty-six the Member Services Department designed the program to emphasize the recruitment, development, and retention of club members under the age of forty. “One-on-One” placed recruitment in the hands of two “buddies,” who encouraged each other to bring prospective members to a meeting. “A Special Guest Program,” utilized a membership roundup as a club project. With membership as a club goal, Kiwanis membership in the 80”s grew by over 13,000 new members…….from “Serving the World 1960-2004”
