CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY SURVEY Activity falling at increasingly lower rate The outlook for the construction industry has become less negative. The indicators of activity levels and number of employees remain below the 50-point dividing line, but have been slowly approaching that mark, indicating a lower rate of decline. In addition, the expectations indicators point to a more positive outlook for the coming months.

All indices are up in June from May, sustaining the downward trend in the sector’s pessimism initiated in February. The investment intentions index experienced the first increase after three months, moving up from 23.2 points in May to 26.9 points in June.

Production and employment down at slower pace The month-on-month activity level indicator grew by 3.7 points in May as compared to April. The index is up by 6.8 points in the year. The indicator of number of employees shows a similar trend, as it rose by 2.4 points between April and May and by 5.1 points in the year. Despite the

growth, the indicators remain below 50 points, indicating a month-over-month decline in both activity and number of employees. The further below 50 points, the more significant and widespread the drop.

Actual-usual activity remains at low levels Notwithstanding the increase in the activity and employment indicators, activity in the construction industry remains significantly below usual levels

for the month. The indicator of actual-usual activity levels has held virtually steady at 26.5 points in recent months.

Operating capacity utilization grows in May Operating capacity utilization is also up, though it still remains twelve percentage points below its average for the month. The indicator rose from 54% in April to 56% in May.

Construction entrepreneurs are less pessimistic The downward trend in the sector’s pessimism initiated in February has accelerated in June. The indices of expected activity levels and new developments and services grew by 4 points and 4.4 points, respectively, between May and June. On the same comparison basis, the indices of expected

purchases of inputs and raw materials and number of employees grew by 2.8 points and 3.9 points, respectively. The expectation indices range from 0 to 100 points, with readings below 50 indicating an expected decline.

Investment intentions up after holding steady for three months Investment intentions*

Entrepreneurs seem to be more likely to invest, even though investment intentions remain at a very low level. After staying flat for three months, the investment intentions indicator edged up by 3.7 points from May to June.
