About the Eagles Seeking their first win of the season, the Edgewood College women’s basketball team came up short in the final two minutes in defeat to Marian, 55-48, on Wednesday night despite a combined 26 points and 15 rebounds from junior Marissa Hoyer and sophomore Allison Gordon. It was a tight game from the outset and neither team led by more than six points until Marian (3-10, 2-6 NACC) turned a two-point lead at the 1:41 mark into a 53-46 advantage with 30 seconds to go. An ensuing layup by freshman Morgan Michaels concluded the scoring for the Eagles (0-14, 0-9 NACC) in their second-straight loss by single digits. The Eagles were outscored 17-10 in the final period after being tied at 38 through three quarters. Hoyer finished with 15 points and seven rebounds on 6-of14 shooting while Gordon added 11 points, eight boards, and three steals on a 5-for-10 performance from the field. The duo combined for 15 points in the first half as the Eagles led for all but 20 seconds en route to a 24-22 edge at the break. Turnovers plagued both offenses in a hard fought game that saw both teams shoot below 34.5 percent. The Eagles gave it away 21 times and Marian finished with 16 turnovers.

About the Inferno The Inferno are 5-9, 5-4 in the NACC and defeated Rockford, 63-61, in their last outing to snap a two-game skid. They previously beat the Eagles, 82-51, on New Year’s Eve after shooting a season-high 50.7 percent from the field. Leading scorer Gabby Hood (12.6 ppg, 8.6 rpg in NACC) leads an offense that ranks seventh with 60.0 ppg during NACC play and is last in free throw percentage (57.5). Alverno carries a 1-5 road record and has won three of their five conference games against the bottom three teams in the NACC.
