Grand Junction Fire FC Recreation Practice Sessions U8 Week 1 March 19-23. Theme: Dribbling, Turns and Moves. Aim: To learn to use all surfaces of the foot when dribbling the ball, and to learn new and improve existing turns and moves Warm up: Area 30x30yds All players have a ball. Dribbling around the area through as many gates as possible, 1 point for each gate. Progress by: making players do ball mastery at the gate(toe taps, foundations, roll overs, step over, inside cut, outside cut), moving/removing gates to increase special awareness, add a defender (gatekeeper) to guard some gates. Coaching points: accelerate through the gate, close control throughout the square, awareness of open gates (make sure there is no queueing at a gate), use of all 4 surfaces of the foot (inside, outside (last 3 toes), laces and sole)
Technical session: Area is same 30x30yds area. Split group into 4 lines, everyone has a ball. First person in each line dribbles toward a middle cone, performs a move (outside cut, inside cut, step over, fakey, shoulder drop) and accelerates towards the line to their right. Once the first person completes the move, the next player goes, keeps the lines moving. Progress by: changing direction, adding 1/2 defenders between the cones to be inactive defenders, change the moves they’re doing. Coaching points: smaller touches up to the cone, bigger touches when accelerating away, use laces when traveling faster, keep eyes up at all times awareness of cone and space.
Fun game: ‘Numbers Game’ Area is 20x15yds Two equal teams all players numbered 1-6. Coach calls a number and those two players go around the goal, coach passes a ball into the field. First player to the ball tries to dribble past opponent and score in the opposition goal. Progress by: add a goalkeeper, increase to 2v2, 2v1 3v1, introduce additional points for a successful move. Coaching points: All points above, low body position for low center of gravity, moves to beat defender, confidence to try moves.
Small sided game: 20x15 Play 2v2 or 3v3 or 2v2+1 depending on numbers of players. Normal rules apply. Feel free to include additional ‘goals’ to a teams score for a successful move. (Make sure to only do this when beating a player, not just doing a step over in 10 yards of space for instance) Progressions: Add extra goals, increase numbers, play numbers up/numbers down Coaching points: All points above, use of moves in suitable area of field, eyes up, awareness of space, changes of speed after completing a move.
