2016 Utah Baseball Outfield
• Senior Wyler Smith started all four games in the outfield over the opening weekend. • Smith, who has started 133 career games, mostly in center field, led Utah and ranked eighth in the Pac-12 last season with a .329 batting average. • Junior Josh Rose started all four games in right field the first weekend, leading Utah with a .357 batting average (5-of-14), including going 3-for-3 with two walks vs. Ball State. • Rose, a three-year starter in the outfield, hit .209 last year with 21 RBI and was second on the team with nine doubles. • Freshman DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. went 2-for-5 with two RBI in his collegiate debut against Ball State. He played in three games with two starts. • Keirsey Jr. was an all-league and all-county player at Helix Charter High School. • Sophomore Andre Jackson, who made 30 outfield starts last season, went 2-for-4 with a double in his only start in the outfield last weekend against Oregon State. He also made an appearance at pitcher in relief (see ‘pitchers’ for more). • Freshman Chandler Anderson made his first career appearance against Oregon State on Monday. • Anderson is a local product who was a threetime first-team all-state player at Park City High School. • Sophomore Patrick Flynn made one appearance as a pinch hitter in game two against Minnesota. He played in 14 games last year as a freshman, hitting .231 in 13 at-bats. • Junior Max Schuman played in three games over the first weekend with a start at designated hitter against Minnesota. • Schuman has played in 91 games over three years with 59 starts at designated hitter.
Catcher
• Senior AJ Young started three games at catcher during the first weekend, driving in two runs in game two against Minnesota with a two-run home run. • Young has started 108 career games between catcher and designated hitter. Last year he hit .297 and led Utah with 15 doubles. • Freshman Zack Moeller made his first career start at catcher against Ball State, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. • Moeller was a two-time first-team all-league selection at San Benito High School. • Sophomore Cole Taylor made two pinch-hit appearances last weekend with a pair of walks, moving into the DH role vs. Oregon State. • Taylor played in 24 games last year with 13 starts between catcher and designated hitter, hitting .255 on the year.
Pitchers
• Sophomore Jayson Rose pitched six innings against Minnesota in Utah’s opening game, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts in the loss. • Rose earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors last year after leading Utah with a 3.54 ERA and tying for ninth in the Pac-12 with 68 strikeouts. He had a 3-5 record on the year.
• Rose was ranked as the 36th-best college prospect for the 2017 MLB draft by D1Baseball.com. • Senior Dalton Carroll earned his first win of the season against Ball State on Saturday. He threw five innings, allowing three runs on four hits. • Carroll has the most experience of any pitcher on the staff with 48 appearances and 38 starts under his belt. He went 5-9 last year with one save and had a 4.94 ERA and 56 strikeouts. • Freshman Riley Ottesen made his first career start in game two against Minnesota, allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. • Ottesen was the 2013 Deseret News Mr. Baseball and joins the Utes after serving an LDS mission in Japan. • Sophomore transfer Josh Lapiana made two appearances over the weekend, throwing 1 2/3 innings in relief in game one against Minnesota (1 run, 3 hits, 1 strikeout) and made his first career start against No. 5 Oregon State (3 runs, 7 hits, 5 strikeouts, 4 1/3 innings). • Lapiana is a transfer from Akron who went 2-3 with a 4.40 ERA and 21 strikeouts as a freshman. • Junior Dylan Drachler entered in relief against Ball State, throwing four innings with nine strikeouts, allowing two unearned runs. He earned his first save of the year. Drachler’s nine strikeouts tied for the second-most by a Pac-12 pitcher over the opening weekend. • Drachler went 2-3 with three starts in 12 games and a 4.78 ERA last year. • Sophomore Andre Jackson pitched three innings of game two against Minnesota in relief, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. • Jackson pitched in just one game last year but was drafted as a pitcher in 2014. • Junior Hunter Rodriguez made one relief appearance during the opening weekend vs. Oregon State. • Rodriguez made 21 appearances in relief last season and had two saves. He had a 5.84 ERA with 29 strikeouts. • Sophomore Tanner Thomas pitched one inning against Oregon State on Monday, striking out two and allowing one hit and one run. • Thomas was strong as a freshman last year, going 2-0 with a 5.68 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 15 games. • Sophomore Trenton Stoltz made two appearances during the opening weekend vs. Minnesota and Oregon State, throwing 1 1/3 total innings and allowing one unearned run with two strikeouts. • Stoltz had a 5.97 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 15 games as a freshman. • Senior Nolan Stouder pitched 1 2/3 innings against Oregon State during the opening weekend with two strikeouts. • Stouder had 39 strikeouts and a 6.11 ERA over 53 innings in his first season last year. • Redshirt freshman Josh Tedeschi made his first career appearance in game two against Minnesota, throwing 2 2/3 innings and allowing three runs (all unearned) on three hits with a strikeout.
