Utah Opens Pac-12 Play at USC

The Utah baseball team plays its first Pac-12 game this weekend in Los Angeles at USC, beginning on Friday, March 16, at 6:00 p.m. PT. Utah went 2-2 last weekend at the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament, defeating Lehigh and Columbia. The Utes had solid outings against Santa Clara and San Jose State, despite the losses. USC is ranked 27th in the NCBWA Poll with a 12-3 record. The Trojans are coming off a threegame sweep of CSU Bakersfield, and have won their last five games. “I think all of our sports have felt this way, but the first chance to play in the Pac-12 is special,” Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. “We’re playing a very good team in USC with great players and a great tradition. We’ve got our hands full. We just need to try to get better every day, and we hope to go down and play well this weekend.” Utah’s Joe Pond will face USC’s Andrew Triggs in game one of the series.

Utes Earn Preseason Honors

Senior outfielder Shaun Cooper and junior pitcher Tyler Wagner have both earned preseason honors. Cooper was selected as a Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American. He was a third-team pick. He was also a CollegeBaseballInsider.com Preseason honorable mention All-American. Last year for the Utes, Cooper was a first-team all-Mountain West Conference selection. He finished sixth in the MWC in batting average (.332), third in slugging percentage (.589) and tied for first in triples (7). Wagner was named to the watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. Wagner led the Mountain West Conference last season and ranked 26th in the NCAA with 12 saves, which is also a Utah single-season record. Last year he was on the NCBWA’s Midseason Stopper of the Year watch list.
