Utah Ready for Rematch Against BYU

The Utah baseball team plays its second of three scheduled games against in-state rival BYU on Tuesday, April 3, at 6:00 p.m. Ben Mordini gets the start on the mound for Utah, while BYU will throw Cameron Keysor. In their first meeting this season last week, the Utes fell to the Cougars, 9-8. BYU was helped by five Utah errors, while the Utes had one of their best offensive outputs of the season with 13 hits in the contest. “It’s another chance for us to play at home and work on getting better,” Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. “We lost a tough game to them last week, and hopefully we’ll make the little things work on Tuesday as we also prepare for our weekend games against a tough Arizona team.” The contest is worth three points in the Deseret First Duel rivalry series. Utah takes on the Wildcats this weekend, with a three-game series beginning on Thursday, April 5. Arizona is ranked fourth in the latest Baseball America poll.

News and Notes

> The Utes have only allowed five home runs this season, which is the fewest in the league. > Utah has struck out 56 batters looking, which ranks second in the league.

Utes Earn Preseason Honors

Senior outfielder Shaun Cooper and junior pitcher Tyler Wagner have both earned preseason honors. Cooper was selected as a Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American. He was a third-team pick. He finished sixth in the MWC in batting average (.332), third in slugging percentage (.589) and tied for first in triples (7). Wagner was named to the watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. Wagner led the Mountain West Conference last season and ranked 26th in the NCAA with 12 saves, which is also a Utah single-season record. Last year he was on the NCBWA’s Midseason Stopper of the Year watch list.
